Milton Keynes Cancer Centre

Project details: Appointed as consultants for FF&E group 2 & 3 items, Pi worked with the project team over 18 months to engage with staff and users to create an outstanding BREEAM building. The centre has brought state-of-the-art cancer services under one roof in MK. It includes a 24-bed inpatient ward, outpatient consultation rooms, procedure rooms and even specialist room to extract bone marrow. There is a Macmillan Information and Wellbeing Centre as well as Holistic support and therapy treatment rooms. Patients have a “quiet room” area and family visiting rooms within a “spacious and uplifting environment” featuring artwork and landscaped gardens.

The building has been supported by Milton Keynes Council at a cost of £10million, Macmillan Cancer Support with £2million, and a public fundraising appeal by Milton Keynes Hospital Charity. Because of this, it was exceptionally important that cost effective design solutions were implemented from early on in the project. We were able to work alongside the architect to ascertain the most important client areas and the function they must achieve. As a leading Cancer Centre, the patient lounge areas had to be outstanding and deliver not only essential care but ‘home’ style care physically enabling patients to socialise and enhance their wellbeing holistically. We managed to rework a small floor space not given to medical treatment and plan in a full lounge area complete with library and pool table. The cost of the games and lounge area was much less than the originally proposed built in seating with individual work and play scenarios. Staff have reported the patient and staff pool tournament is a highlight of each day with patients in a much happier state of mind!

Services provided: FF&E Consultancy, user group engagement, samples testing, fabric selections, audits, inclusive workshops, budgeting, logistics planning, procurement, delivery, installation, site surveys and ongoing service.
